Booms are used to extend the crude oil burner and gas flare a set distance from an installation to allow the produced hydrocarbons to be flared safely and move the radiated heat away from the installation.
The boom is a portable U-shaped truss assembly. The kingpost attaches to the rig structure and is braced with three tie-back struts. Vertical suspension cables and horizontal wind-stay cables support the boom, so a rig crane is not needed for support. The length of the boom depends on the anticipated flow rates and the installation.
By using a boom, operators can avoid exposing property and personnel to excessive heat radiation levels from the combustion process. The U-shaped configuration helps provide added security for personnel using the boom.

Features and Benefits
- Modular Design: Available in 60 ft, 90 ft, and 120 ft lengths.
- Easy Upgrades: Modular design allows easy upgrade from 60 ft to 90 ft or 120 ft.
- Lightweight Structure: Reduces crane capacity requirements and simplifies installation.
- Efficient Attachment: A boom attachment point at the kingpost easily accepts the boom into a U-shaped slot, reducing and simplifying installation time.
- Reduced Congestion: Integral air, water, and vent lines reduce weight and piping congestion.
- Added Safety: Protected walkway provides added safety.
Operation
Booms are typically installed on either side of an offshore rig. The well test piping typically includes a manifold to divert flow to the downwind side for safe operation. In addition to the oil and gas lines, there are water, air, vent, and pilot gas lines.
